Love is important because without it life has no meaning or purpose. Love allows us to do more than we could   1   accomplish without its power. So often we take good care of our    2 needs. We make sure our bodies are fed, cleaned, clothed, exercised and rested. However, we tend to 3  the most important need---love. Of course, as a society, love is not overlooked. Popular  media constantly places great emphasis   4   what we need to do to attract “love” .   5    being  loved is not as powerful an emotional need as that desire to love someone else.

The need to love and   6   others is built into us biologically. This need is   7    allows   parents to give up sleep and food while raising their children. This need is what allows people to put themselves 8 to save others from natural 9 or threats.

Love means to cherish, hold dear, and treasure. We don’t hurt, harm, or cause pain to these we love; rather, we seek to   10   their suffering. It’s not about wanting to possess or control others;  it’s about wanting to set them free. Love is the power that allows the wheel of life to continue turning, for when we love we look beyond our own needs and desires. We sacrifice our time, our energy, our wishes, and sometimes even ourselves because of love. It is love that allows emergency services personnel to face danger.

第四题、阅读理解(请选出正确的选项,单选题共 5 小题,每题 2 分,共 10

分)

Some international students want to know how to get a scholarship from an American college, and others want to know the differences among various kinds of financial aid. These include assistantships, grants, scholarships and fellowships.

An assistantships is a job a student does. In exchange, the student receives money or attends classes for free. Graduate students usually get assistantships. The student works about twenty hours a week helping a professor. The student may teach classes, help grade papers and tests, or do research in a laboratory.

A grant is a gift of money to pay for some or all of the costs of college. Unlike loans, grants do not have to be repaid. Private groups or organizations generally give grants to students who need money.

Scholarships and fellowships also do not have to be repaid. A scholarship is financial aid to undergraduate students; a fellowship is the same kind of aid for graduate students. Generally, scholarships and fellowships go to students with special abilities or athletic skills. Some scholarships are based on financial need. Others go to students who live in a certain area.

For example, the University of Missouri in Columbia has two financial aid programs for international students only. The Global Tiger Scholarship is supported by the group representing former university students. In return for scholarship money, the international student agrees to help the group during the school year. The other scholarship or fellowship at the University of Missouri is called the grant-in-aid program. It provides money to students who need the help, get good grades and take part in university activities.

1. What is the passage mainly about? ( )

When we’re young and we dream of love and fulfillment, we think perhaps of moon-drenched Parisian nights or walks along the beach at sunset.

No one tells us that the greatest moments of a lifetime are fleeting, unplanned and nearly always catch us off guard.

Not long ago,as I was reading a bedtime story to my seven-year-old daughter, Annie, I became aware of her focused look. She was staring at me with a faraway, blank expression. Apparently, completing The Tale of Samuel Whiskers was not as important as we first thought.

I asked what she was thinking about. "Mommy," she whispered, "I just can't stop looking at your pretty face."

I almost dissolved on the spot.

Little did she know how many trying moments the glow of her sincerely loving statement would carry me through over the following years.

Not long after, I took my four-year-old son to an elegant department store, where the melodic notes of a classic love song drew us toward a tuxedoed musician playing a grand piano. Sam and I sat down on a marble bench nearby, and he seemed as transfixed by the lilting theme as I was.

I didn't realize that Sam had stood up next to me until he turned, took my face in his little hands and said, "Dance with me."

If only those women walking under the Paris moon knew the joy of such an invitation made by a round-cheeked boy with baby teeth. Although shoppers openly chuckled, grinned and pointed at us as we glided and whirled around the open atrium, I would not have traded a dance with such a charming young gentleman if I'd been offered the universe.

A. realized that her daughter was gazing at her

B. realized that her daughter was not interested in the story

C. noticed that her daughter didn’t understand the story

D. noticed that her daughter was whispering to her

2. What did the writer mean by saying “I almost dissolved on the spot”? ( )

A. She couldn’t help crying. B. She was too surprised.

C. She was so moved. D. She couldn’t help laughing.

3. What had helped the writer survive those hard moments later on? ( )

A. Annie’s love. B. Sam’s encouragement.

C. Her own dream. D. Her friend’s sincerity.

4. In the department store what attracted the writer and her son? ( )

A. A pleasant love song played by a musician.

B. A beautiful marble bench nearby.

C. A round-cheeked boy with baby teeth.

D. A shopper who was grinning.

5. To the writer’s great surprise and joy, her son          . ( )

A. sat down with her on the bench, listening to the music

B. was so fascinated by the music that he kept whirling

C. was so happy while listening to the song that he chuckled

D. stood up and invited her to dance with him

Early Excellence Centers are successfully helping tackle the effects of poverty on young children while supporting parents in helping their children learn, according to Ofsted inspectors. A new report from the education watchdog found that both children and parents benefited from the centers, which offer childcare, parenting classes and adult learning.

England’s Chief Inspector of Schools, David Bell, said: “Early Excellence Centers are ahead of the game when it comes to providing a range of services for local communities in some of the most disadvantaged parts of the country.” The findings of “ this report show that there is some excellent work going on at the centers to give children a better start.”

Nowadays, the opera house is such a part of Sydney that it is difficult to remember the anguish (   )  that  surrounded  its creation.   A rough sketch of the possibilities of such a building  by the architectural genius Jorn Utzon, submitted to an international competition in 1956, was initially almost ignored, but was eventually selected as the plan most suited to the site’s unique position on Bennelong Point. The technology for much of what Utzon designed did not exist and had to be invented as the job went along. As a result there were staggering cost escalations, met  by the Opera House lottery, and a final bill of over $100 million. Australia is home to the world’s ten most deadly snakes. A bite from any one of them can kill you, but some day their venom(毒液) may be saving lives.

Promising cancer research using snake venoms has led scientists at the University of South Australia to wonder why no one had previously turned their attention to the venom of Australian snakes, especially since they are known to contain a complex mixture of elements.

Now, Associate Professor Anthony Woods and colleagues have identified a compound found in the venom of these snakes (they won’t say which) that may stop the growth of malignant tumors(恶性肿瘤).Woods explains that tumors are living tissue and need a blood supply to fuel growth. To grow, tumors develop specialized blood vessels. Many cutting-edge cancer treatments attempt to starve the tumor of this blood supply, thereby arresting growth. The downside, however, of current therapies such as chemotherapy(化学疗法) is that healthy cells are affected as well. But not so with the Australian snake venom. Woods discovered that, used at extremely low doses, the venomous compound kills the cells that line blood vessels in tumors, but not healthy cells.

Scientists believe that the ability to use the toxin at such a low dose makes it promising as a cancer treatment. However, more research is needed before it can be tested in human.

1. What is this passage mainly about? ( )

A. The venom of the snakes may save human lives.

B. The venom of the snakes can kill human beings,

A. useless B. hopeful C. innovative D. successful

A. they are especially poisonous

B. they have killed many people

C. they contain a mixture of elements

D. they have never been studied

4. Compared with current therapies, snake venom therapy seems to be          . ( )

A. cheaper B. safer C. simpler D. quicker

5. What can be inferred from this passage? ( )

A. Snake venom has long been used in Australia to treat tumors.

B. Only Australian snake venom ought to be sued to treat tumors.

C. The doctors have started to use snake venom to treat tumors.
